1. Jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 on OS X or Windows with PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze

iOS 4.3.1 jailbreakA jailbreak of iOS 4.3.1 is now possible with both PwnageTool on Mac, and Sn0wbreeze on Windows. RedmondPie — who else? — has some handy guides that you can follow for all iOS 4.3.1 devices on Windows, for iPhone 4 on OS X, iPad 1 on OS X, iPhone 3GS on OS X, and iPod touch 4G and 3G on OS X.

All iOS 4.3.1 jailbreaks are still tethered, meaning you’ll have to jailbreak your device after every reboot. An untethered jailbreak is slated for release sometime in the next week — but 4.3 was meant to have an untether, too, and that never emerged.

Maybe Apple’s updated security mechanisms will finally keep hackers at bay!

  3. Sharp shows off IGZO LCD and OLEDs including a 13.5-inch QFHD screen

Sharp shows off IGZO LCD and OLEDs including a 13.5-inch QFHD screen

Sharp announced earlier this year that it was starting to crank out LCD panels based on new indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) technology and now it’s ready to show some off at the Society for Information Display show in Boston. Currently sized for phones and tablets, the first prototypes include a pair of LCDs, one a 4.9-inch 720x1280 display, and the other coming at 6.1-inches with a resolution of 2560x1600. As an example of what will be possible further down the line, it also has a pair of OLED panels, one 13.5-inch 3840x2160 QFHD panel based on White OLEDs with RGB color filters (similar to the LG HDTV recently introduced), and a flexible 3.4-inch 540x960 screen (shown above). According to Sharp the new tech means screens with higher resolutions, lower power consumption, narrower bezels and higher performance touch screens because it enables even smaller thin-film transistors than the ones currently in use. The Associated Press reports it expects to apply the upgrade to production lines in this fiscal year, for now you can hit the source link for a few diagrams and examples of crystalline structures or check the gallery for pics of the other displays.

  5. Enyo’s End Is Not Nigh

Most of HP’s webOS team, including Matt McNulty, head of the project, is moving to Google according to a report by The Verge citing several unnamed sources. The departing team is said to be almost wholly responsible for Enyo’s code. Enyo replaced Mojo as webOS’s software development kit in 2011.

  6. Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game

    sticks
Sticks is another one of those rare games where the intro is actually worth watching. It introduces you to office worker Bob, who is basically a wage slave fantasizing about a better existence.

Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says “Sticks.” This is where the game starts.

Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob — but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you’re done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.

The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn’t get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.

  7. Orange San Diego hands-on and first impressions

Intel arrives to the party on a carrier branded, middle of the road Android smartphone. But is it any good?

    Orange San Diego

Down in jolly old London Town this morning, Orange UK threw a little breakfast soiree in a venue 31 floors up. The purpose? To officially unveil their latest own-brand Android smartphone, until now known as the Santa Clara. Traditionally, Orange has piggy-backed onto a device from the likes of ZTE, offering a budget device geared towards the low end of the market. They’re also not usually the sort of devices that warrant gathering members of the press in the center of London at breakfast time. With their latest offering — launching as the San Diego, so keeping to the city name tradition — the carrier is going about things a little different. There is something to shout about — Intel Inside.

  8. Vimeo provides the soundtrack of our lives with new tools

    Image

What’s Wes Anderson without the Kinks, Pulp Fiction without Dick Dale or Benny Hill without “Yakkity Sax?” Vimeo knows the power of a good soundtrack, so it’s adding a couple of tools to its arsenal. The Enhancer lets users choose from some 50,000-plus tracks from the Vimeo Music Store, adding them directly to videos, adjusting audio levels and shifting the beginning and end of the song. A partnership with SmartSound, meanwhile, offers up access to 4,000 songs that can be customized by adjusting length, instrumental mix and musical arrangement. Tracks from the latter service will run $1.99 for non-commercial use and $20 for commercial licenses. Press release after the break.

One of the many, many games on sale through the Because We May promotion is Spirits by Spaces of Play, and even though it’s two years old, it has weathered the test of time well enough to be featured by Apple, and we figured it was worth a fresh review.
